Comments:
There have been many rumours about this mysterious car. Some say that it is still hidden on the disc somewhere, some sites say it was going to be one of the standard cars, some say that it was to have been a secret car that was hidden in miami and the player had to find it, and some sites say that it was to be a car that you could drive once the game was complete.
In the end the playstation version of Driver didn't benefit from the car selection screen that you get when you complete the PC version.
Anyhow the GSX didn't make it into the final game and exists only in these early screenshots. The believed reason for its deletion is the fact that it was too much like the real thing. As you will have noticed by now, Driver cars are not faithful copies of the original. This is because paying to use real cars for the game would have been costly. Also many car manufacturers had objections to models of their cars being damaged and used in conjunction with a law breaking theme (I know its stupid but there you go!)
There two versions developed for use in Driver. The first appears in screenshots of miami (see first screenshot). This car was almost identical to the real thing, the only difference was the lack of a rear spoiler and the fact that car had the front of a 1972 GSX and the back of a 1970 GSX. This was obviously too muck like the real thing (check out the screen shot of the rear and you will see that it even says buick on the back).
The Second version developed was for Los Angeles (see second screenshot) and was an attempt at changing the car to make it less like the original. So the back lights and grille were changed slightly but it would seem there was still a problem. this problem was probably to do with the colours themselves. Yellow with black stripes was still an obvious GSX give away. Also the livery is very similar to the colours worn by "Eleanor" from Gone in 60 seconds (1974) so its possible that trouble was met there as well. The LA GSX is still in the game, as the shape was used for the standard miami car (see screenshot 3). However it wears a plain black coat of paint instead yellow with black stripes.
There is one more version of the GSX which thankfully you CAN drive. When Driver 2 hit the shelves many were quick to discover that the GSX was hidden on the Chicago level. To find it you have to drive right up to the north end of the town to Wrigleyville Stadium (its marked on the map). Once there get out of your car and walk round the stadium until you find the door marked "tickets". Press triangle to buy a ticket and the metal gates at the other end will open. Head on in and go up the walkway. Now run along the top and go down underneath the crowd. There you see the GSX waiting to be driven. Press tringle to get in and head for the gate, it will automatically open as you approach. Unfortunatley this GSX seems to have suffered the transfer from Driver 1 to Driver 2. The back of the car in particular looks a bit dodgy and the rear lights do not line up that well. As well as this the colour seems a bit diluted and it looks nowhere near as nice as one Driver 1. The other thing is it looks very similar to one of the standard chicago cars and it doesn't go any faster. If Reflections wanted to make this car worth while finding they should have spent more time on modelling it and given it the benefit of being fast like "Superfly Drive" in Driver 1. In defense of the new GSX I would say that they hhave done a nice job on the grill at the front. It is not exact but it is a nice rendition of it, also at least now can drive the GSX, thats got to better than nothing! Prototype wise the Driver 2 GSX is the reverse of the Driver1 GSX. This time round the car has the front of a 1970 GSX and the back of a 1972 whereas the Driver 1 GSX had the front of a 1972 and the rear of a 1970.
One last point of interest is a pretty hazy screenshot of a red GSX in LA that I found on a spanish website (I think). Whether this was to be an actual car or whether it is just an edited screenshot remains a mystery. I unfortunately don't have the screenshot anymore so if anyone finds the source, please email me.
I am always looking for more screenshots and ways to drive the GSX on Driver 1. If anyone can supply additional info or screenshot regarding the GSX them please, PLEASE, PLEASE email me.
Thanks.
